NuChemE Summer Program

Starting in 2025, the NuChemE Pipeline project will host science, engineering and business students at New Mexico State University (NMSU) for a 10-week experience in which they learn about radioisotopes in history, chemistry, engineering, and earth sciences. During the laboratory, classroom and travel program, students will gain hands-on experience with radioisotope safety, and separation and analysis of rare earth element and actinides for real-world applications.

Eligibility Requirements


  • US Citizen/permanent residents

  • Student in good standing who are pursuing a degree in chemistry, engineering, earth sciences/geology, supply chain management, or similar field and who are at 18 years old as of May 15, 2025

  • Preference will be given to undergraduate students enrolled at Minority Serving Institutions

Program Perks


  • Stipend of $5000 dispersed over the 10-week program (participants will be expected to cover the cost of food/meals from their stipends)

  • Travel to & from NMSU

  • Housing at NMSU during the 6-week in-person session (June 2-July 11)

  • Tuition & fees for 3-credit course

  • Travel & lodging for two field trips during the 6-week in-person session

  • Travel to & from Augusta, GA for the Department of Energy Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program annual conference and tour of Savannah River National Lab
