NuChemE Project to Co- host Shires Graduate Research Seminar

The NuChemE Pipeline project is pleased to co-host the next Shires Graduate Research Seminar in coordination with the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering at New Mexico State University. We will be welcoming speaker Allison Mrotek; Research Technologist for Los Alamos National Lab.

Working at a National Lab: The Role of an Isotope Geochemist in Nuclear Forensics

Abstract: Analytical techniques used in geologic laboratories, such as thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), are used at Los Alamos National Laboratory for analysis of environmental samples to support bioassay and nuclear forensics programs. Having an educational background in geochemistry with experience operating analytical instrumentation prepares students to enter the workforce as nuclear isotope analysts.

Presentation co-author: Jeremy Inglis

Speaker Bio: After completing a Masters of Science in Geology at NMSU in 2023, Allison began working at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a research technologist in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry group. She works on the Clean Chemistry team (TIMS sub-team) supporting bioassay and nuclear forensics programs (Pu and Np analyses). Her research interests include analytical method development for actinides, nuclear forensics, and nuclear material characterization.

Location: Jett Hall 259

Time: 3:00 pm – 3:50 pm

Date: Friday, November 15, 2024
